Contemporary half calf; spine with simple gold rules, red leather lettering piece, gilt, marbled paper boards, hand-colored frontispiece of the interior of a Harem; folding map. The map has an unobtrusive repair of a short marginal tear (no loss). The map, endpapers and frontispiece are lightly soiled, board papers and edges generally worn and rubbed; else a very good copy. Armorial bookplate of John Gregory Crace, and with an inscription on a preliminary blank: "To Emily Patan from her affectionate husband J. F. Patan. Calcutta 1826." First edition in English of these letters written by Joseph Michel Tancoigne during his voyage to Persia between 1807 and 1809, as a member of the French embassy of the general Gardane, the first of the three French embassies to Persia in the nineteenth century. Frontispiece portrait of the author; engraved vignette on title page, repeated on last leaf; three plates depicting the arms of 213 monasteries described in the text. Contemporary full calf; spine in 7 compartments with raised bands; leather lettering label, gilt. Pp. 405-408 and 619-620 misnumbered, 403-406 and 919-920 respectively. Printer's records indicate 500 copies printed. Hinges cracked but firm, spine tips worn, tiny closed tear on the title page, else this is a very good copy. ESTC T92354.

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc, 1928. First edition. Fine. Hardcover. 8vo. 253pp. Blue cloth with yellow paste-ons printed in black on the spine and upper board. Top edge yellow. Colorful endpapers in blue and yellow. This copy is as bright as the day it was published. We note only a tiny bump on the top edge. The dustwrapper is fine as well, and is not price-clipped. It is a slight crease corresponding to the bump on the board beneath it. Sometimes call Tarkington's only flapper novel. And you will not find a nicer copy.

Kyoto: Tanaka Nao Senryōten, 1975. Limited edition. Loose plates. Fine. Portfolio containing 150 samples of Japanese weaving mounted onto think handmade paper and with the names of the weaves and weavers. The samples are arranged by locale, from Kyushu to Okinawa, ten areas in all. In fine condition. The protective portfolio is doubled, with the inner section covered in cream cloth, and the outer in deep blue cloth. One of 750 numbered copies. In original shipping containers. This is the volume containing samples to an accompanying text, not here present. In Japanese, but there is a computer printout listing the mounted samples in English. .

Nicely bound in quarter green morocco, gilt spine title, pebble-grain green cloth. Plates have varying degrees of light spotting and soiling else this is a very good copy in a fine binding.

Exquisitely illuminated on every page in full color and gilt by Alberto Sangorski. The edges are worn, inner hinges cracked and vellum lightly stained with age, else this is a very good copy. The scarce dustwrapper is present. It has significant wear especially to the edges of the folds and with a worn hole in the spine, Still it gives a good appearance. .

Illustrated with twenty full color tipped-in plates by Eleanor Brickdale. Vellum soiled and lightly rubbed with a few red spots in the lower left quadrant,, boards yawning, ties perished, else a very good copy. Contains "Enid," "Vivien," "Elaine" and "Guinevere" from Tennyson's Idylls. The designs on the upper board and spine incorporate Arthur's sword with crowns and hearts. It is lightly toned, shows some wear and chipping at the edges. The original price on the spine was at some time neatly excised, but left the "$" intact, indicating this was a copy intended for the American market. Contains "Enid," "Vivien," "Elaine" and "Guinevere" from Tennyson's Idylls. The designs on the upper board incorporate King Arthur's shield and crest, both forms of the expected dragon rampant. Neat gift inscription on the reverse of the frontispiece leaf. Scarce in this condition; rare in dustwrapper. Howey F-209. Fine.

This and the use of the tall 's' throughout suggest a publication date not later than 1800. First edition. 12mo. 198pp. containing 42 letters by 'Onesimus' on a variety of Christian subjects. Original boards, paper spine. Hinges cracked but firm, and a neat repair of the bottom inch of the rear hinge else about fine. Listed as Part One on the title page, but we have not been able to discover whether any further parts were published and this work is complete in itself. Garnet Terry is usually known for his work as an artist/engraver and the author of several pamphlets on engraving. This work, apparently his only work on Christianity, provoked 'The Bank Note' by V. M'Culla in 1806. 'The Bank Note' has been called a 'virulent sectarian attack' on Terry's work. M'Culla identifies Terry as a 'minister of darkness' in Clare Court, Drury Lane. Exceedingly… Ler mais

Paris: Ernst Henri, Editeur, 1925. Loose plates. Good. Folio, 11 by 15 inches. Portfolio of 40 loose plates. Paper over boards, cloth spine, printed paper label, cloth tie. The plates are printed in full color and mounted to a gray card with a printed black border. Portfolio well worn, and the spine repaired. The text pages are soiled and chipped. The mountings for the plates are sunned along the edges, but the plates are fine. Overall a good copy. These embroideries and woven printed fabrics were exhibited at the U.S.S.R. pavilion at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts at Paris in 1925. The samples were supplied by ethnographic museums and almost all of them were produced in the 19th century. A few are from the 17th and 18th century and plates 26 and 27 are from modern Ukraine. .

Contemporary binding of half brown morocco, spine in six compartments, gilt; marbled paper boards and edges, top edge gilt. The binding is lightly worn and rubbed at the edges and hinges else is in very good condition with fine text and illustrations. The binding is unsigned. Church Catalogue, No. 727. Slater, Early Editions, p. 332. Shephard, Thackeray Bibliography, p. 10. Many listings suggest that this volume was printed in 1874, not 1864, but the references agree on the 1864 date. .

White cloth beautifully decorated in gilt by Sarah Wyman Whitman (also issued in green cloth, the white seems less common). A little overall age-toning on the boards, trace of wear to spine tips, light occasional foxing, but a nice and sound very good copy. With the author's cut signature laid-in. The garden plan is present after p. 72. BAL 19923 which calls this one of the most elaborate pieces of bookmaking of the period. 1019 copies printed. .

Illustrated throughout with illustrations of the Stations of the Cross on one page and on the facing page appropriate music, generally scored for SATB or SAB or SSA. A small abrasion on the upper wrapper else a very good copy. Rare Bread and Puppet title. The Bread and Puppet Theatre is a politically radical puppet theater company founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann and Elka Schumann and is currently based in Glover, Vermont. It is known for large puppets as well as the commitment to making art available to all. .
