"Author's edition from Advance sheets. " Contains 214 illustrations. The author describes the architecture as well as the influences on the architecture of Germany, Holland, Denmark, Netherlands, etc. This is an interesting and enlightening account of travel by a skilled and observant architect. Decorated covers with circular gilt decoration and black text, all edges are red. Covers a little dull with light wear, spine leaning somewhat. Cincinnati: Poe & Hitchcock. Good. 1867. Hardcover. Born and educated in Germany, Nast emigrated to America and became an influential Methodist minister in Cincinnati as well as in Germany. Printed in double columns. The cloth portion of the covers is a bit worn, and there is shelf wear to extremities. The leather spine is strong and tight as is the entire book. The contents are clean and and bright; half leather with leather spine with raised bands and gilt spine lettering as well as leather spine tips. Frontis portrait of Nast is a steel engraving. Lyons, IL: Author. Good. 1892. Softcover. This handwritten ledger was kept by Henry Neher who ran Frog Pond Farm in Lyons, Cook County, Illinois for James Farnsworth (of Chicago?). Entries are in pencil and are quite legible. Neher was born in Illinois to German immigrant parents. He seems to have lived in Lyons for most of his life. There are references to James Farnsworth, owner of Frog Pond Farm in the account book, and a note that Farnsworth seems to have "settled" the accounts with Neher every month, and one note says: "in city 93 Dearborn St."--this is presumably, Chicago. Also recorded are a number of 25 cent railway fares recorded by Neher, presumably to Chicago. Neher documents the expenses of the farm in (wagon grease, cows coming in, ice, etc) and also provides information on hired hands with the amounts they are due, expenses they incurred while working, dates, etc. This is a small ledger, measuring about 4" x 7". Boston: Houghton, Mifflin & Co.. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1884. Hardcover. Rufus Cohate (1799-1859) was an Massachusetts orator, lawyer and U.S. Senator (1841). He was one of the pre-eminent orators of his day, and was a well-known trial lawyer who often took the side of persecuted or unpopular figures. He was was first aligned with the Republican party, but later switched to the Whigs. In his politics, he supported the Compromise of 1850 even though he did not support slavery, and he also opposed the annexation of Texas. By all appearances he was a complex and brilliant man. This copy is the 1884 first edition, but seems to have been rebound in a pretty rose cloth covers with a leather spine label. There is an interesting typescript of an Oct, 16 1883 three page letter from the author to Houghton Mifflin regarding this book that has been bound in as part of the frontis matter: "Gentelmen, I am submitting for consideration my work on Rufus Cohate..." Over the years Mitchell built a large manufacturing operation in Owosso that eventually provided station wagon bodies for General Motors starting with wood bodies in 1942 for Buick and culminating in hundreds of thousands of all metal bodies for Buick, Oldsmobile, Mercury and Lincoln between 1954 and 1964--including the classic Mark II Lincoln Continental and the fiberglass 1961 Corvette. A fascinating story of an innovative and successful Michigan entrepreneur who rose from humble beginnings. This is the first hardcover edition (a paperback edition was published in 2003).
