This Caxton Edition of Scott's "Waverley Novels" is nicely illustrated. This volume in this edition is undated, however others in the Caxton Edition are dated in the late 1800s. In very good dark green bevel edged cloth boards, with blind stamped ruled and decorative edges on all sides, gilt circle to front with gilt male head; gilt titles to back strip. The covers are very clean, straight and firm. The end papers are foxed and lightly tanned; name and address sticker to front paste down. Slightly age-toned cut edges; tinted brown top edge. The text block is in very good condition, tightly bound and clean except for the prelims and the end page which are lightly foxed. With many b/w illustrations and with attractive head pieces. Thought to be issued without dust jacket. Part of colllectable collection.

A good undated hardcover without dustwrapper in rubbed quarter-bound blue cloth covered boards which are bumped/rubbed to the corners. The brown fabric backstrip, with gilt lettering and thistle, is bumped/rubbed to the ends with some fraying and damage. Internally very good with burgundy endpapers without writing or stamps. The back hinge is just starting to crack, but secure, the pages are tanned and occasionally lightly foxed as are the text-block edges with teg. Tissue protected frontispiece by P. Wilson.
