First US Edition, octavo size, 41 pp. Alan Watts (1915-1973) was a British poet and philosopher, best known for popularizing Eastern religion, philosophy and poetry for a Western audience, most notably the counter-culture youth in the Bay Area and New York in the 1950s and 60s. This essay was first published in 1947 under the title "Zen Buddhism, A New Outline and Introduction".
___DESCRIPTION: Original handmade paper covered boards, lettering in black and red to upper board and backstrip, title page in black and red, chapter headings in red, chapter headpieces of chops, decorations, and illustrations; octavo size (8 3/8" by 5 3/8") pagination: [i-viii] ix-x, 11-41; lacking the original glassine dust jacket.
___CONDITION: A fine copy overall, the paper boards clean and without wear, the corners straight and without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; light offsetting to the endpapers, else fine.
