Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 1986. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Fine. 11.5" by 9.5"; 11" by 8.5". Wassily Kandinsky; Saint John the Baptist et al.. The first edition of Frank Stella's work on abstract art, with the very scarce uncorrected proof with editorial annotations throughout. The first edition, first impression with a complete numberline, with the uncorrected proof copy of the work. Two volumes. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper to 'Working Space' with the 'Uncorrected Proof' being in the publisher's original paper covers.Illustrated throughout with vibrant full colour and monochrome illustrations. This work was written by Frank Stella, an American painter, printmaker and artist, and provides a detailed and informed view on abstract art from the eyes of an artist. The work contains a series of talks that were given as part of Stella's delivery of the 'Charles Eliot Norton Lectures' in 1983-84, which are given as part of a professorship that is gives distinguished creative figures the chance to deliver six lectures on the arts. The uncorrected proof features the original, unedited version of 'Working Space', with editorial notes throughout including directions for delivering the work as a speech, with monochrome examples of the artwork that would feature in the first edition. In the publisher's original cloth with the original unclipped dust wrapper, with the proof copy being in the original publisher's paper covers. Externally lovely to 'Working Space' and smart to the 'Uncorrected Proof' with handling marks, pencil and ink annotations, edge wear, fading to the spine and extremities and a small closed tear to the tail of the front joint. The wrap is lovely with only slight sunning to the extremities of the fly leaves. Internally firmly bound with clean and bright pages to 'Working Space' and firmly bound with generally bright pages with editorial annotations throughout to the proof. Newspaper article on the work neatly paced inside. The 'Uncorrected proof is in very good condition. Fine
