Sobre este item

New York: Frederick A. Stokes,, 1916. First US edition, first printing, published two years after the first British edition. Cooper "discovered conditions relative to the working woman and the labouring class which can only be observed by a householder" (Prologue). Elizabeth Cooper (1877-1945) was an author who ventured to Egypt to write about the culture and lives of Egyptian women, from how religion affects them to marriage and polygamy and the differences between rural and cosmopolitan women. Cooper was able to visit many households thanks to her friendship with the Egyptian feminist writer Malak Hifni Nasif (1886-1918), who advocated for women's education and marriage rights and whom Cooper misidentifies as "Malak El Bassel". Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, black and white photograph to front cover, top edge gilt. Tissue-guarded half-tone photographic frontispiece, full-page illustrations in the text; 4 pp. of advertisements to rear. Gilt on spine faded, illustration a bit spotted and chipped to lower edge, corners a bit bumped, edges lightly foxed, minor toning throughout, rear inner hinge neatly repaired with Japanese tissue paper. A very good copy. Not in Robinson. Robin Ostle, Sensibilities of the Islamic Mediterranean: Self-expression in a Muslim Culture from Post-classical Times to the Present Day, 2008.
