Very Southern sympathetic as the author was a resident of Columbia when all this took place and was later mayor of the city. His statement places the blame directly on Sherman's men, as there were no fires when the Confederates abandoned the city. The major blaze began in the northwest part of the city and spread rapidly due to a high wind. There was no doubt in the author's mind it was a conflagration caused by drunken soldiers and was not done under any official order.
