Sobre este item
The first English translation of a French novel by Jules-Amédée Barbey d'Aurevilly, first published in 1884. It was translated into English by Sebastian Melmoth (O.W.). The translation was at one time attributed to Oscar Wilde, working under a pseudonym, but this has subsequently been shown to be untrue.
Only 500 copies of this first edition were printed "for private circulation only, amongst friends and subscribers". It is bound in white vellum, with black titles on the spine and O.W on the front. The pages are rough-cut on the side and bottom edges, and are edged in red on the top edge.
Vellum boards are patchily discoloured and mildly rubbed in places; 3 small red stains on the rear cover. Pages are foxed.
