Dublin: Hodges and Smith, 1862. original green cloth, gilt-lettered on spine, gilt illustration on front board showing Britannia and Hibernia reaching out across the Irish Sea, some rubbing wear to spine ends and bumping to foredge corners, inner front hinge, which had been cracked, strengthened and repaired, early owner's signature on front pastedown, pages xii, 372 plus 20 pages of commercial advertisements at rear, mostly illustrated; book is illustrated with 33 (of 35 - two missing) plates, some nicely coloured, with tissue guards, folding map of Ireland at front, folding map of Europe showing telegraph connections, with proposed transAtlantic cable from Valentia at rear. Some foxing affecting some illustrations and all of the tissue guards, but text block is generally clean, tight and readable. The author was a correspondent of Saunder's News-letter, a Dublin newspaper noted for its non-partisan journalism. The text of the book originally appeared as articles ('letters') in the newspaper. A considerable Irish rarity.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
