Sobre este item
Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1849. First Edition. First printing. Small octavo (20cm). Publisher's blind-embossed boards, spine titled in gilt; x,[10]386pp. A straight copy, structurally sound with minimal external rubbing; spine cloth sun-faded but gilt still bright and legible; text moderately foxed throughout - still Very Good overall, and better than usually seen. With the contemporary ownership signature of a "J.C. Ryall" to title page.
The first of three service memoirs by the distinguished naval surgeon, who would be named the United States Navy's first Surgeon General in 1871. Wood recounts experiences in the South Atlantic and the Pacific, including visits to Honolulu, the Marquesas Islands (including an account of native tattooing), Lima, Monterey and elsewhere. The final chapters recount Wood's daring incognito traversal of Mexico at the outbreak of the Mexican-American War, during which he gathered vital intelligence on behalf of Commodore John D. Sloat. A quite decent copy of a book that has become somewhat infrequent in commerce. HOWES W-646. SABIN 105083. FORBES 1763.
