Original brown cloth, titled in gilt on front and spine; pink coated endpapers; [i]-xi 15-135pp; wood-engraved frontispiece. Nineteenth-century inscription and bookplate of the New England Historic-Genealogical Society, gift of William S. Appleton. Straight and tight, cloth rubbed, small losses to head and tail, upper edge of front board bumped, but internally clean: Very Good.
A memoir of urban childhood poverty and labor, written on behalf of all the children "in our great cities, who at a tender age are compelled to rely upon their own wits and exertions for support" (xii). Congressman William Sumner Appleton (1840-1903) joined the New England Historic-Genealogical Society as a college junior in 1859 and later bequeathed significant gifts to several New England historical and artistic institutions, including the Boston Athenaeum, Massachusetts Historical Society (Charles C. Smith, "William Sumner Appleton," Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 39.4 p. 639, 644).
