Edinburgh: Printed by Mr. Andrew Symson, and Mr. Robert Freebairn, and sold at their Shops, 1710. Second Edition. Quarto. [5], 2-19, [iv.], [8], 3 - 486, [96] pp, includes list of subscribers. Bound in full contemporary calf; six raised bands; gilt ruling and spine decoration; edges sprayed red. Wear to edges, corners bumped, general scuffing; split and flaked along joints though boards remain attached, front board a little more loose but overall binding holding, rather crude paper repair along gutter of leaf 5C. Bookplate of Victor Albert George Child Villiers to front pastedown, along with additional recent ownership stamp. Good to Very Good, internally clean and sound.
Collated and presumed complete, ESTC noting that "The arrangement of the preliminaries varies from copy to copy."
This middle Scots translation of the Aeneid, often called Eneados, was originally completed by the poet and clergyman Douglas in 1513 and first printed in 1553. The work was the first translation of a major classical text into Scots and its literary merit has endured, receiving praise in the modern era from the likes of Ezra Pound and C.S. Lewis. Of note is the Older Scots glossary at rear, which was prepared by scholar Thomas Ruddiman.
