This is an exceedingly rare wartime speech pamphlet featuring Churchill's Address to the Italian People of 23rd December 1940. Broadcasting from the Cabinet War Rooms, Churchill sought to assure the Italians of Britain's historic friendship with Italy and place blame for the conflict on Mussolini. Churchill's speech is published here with two others - King George VI's Christmas Day Message of 25th December 1940 and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King's Christmas Day message to the Canadian Army. This speech pamphlet is unusual in several respects - its publication, its survival, and its superlative condition. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (pages 530-532) the publisher - Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company - was in business from 1902 to 1942. This is the story of Rudolph Brazda, who when he died in 2011 was the last known survivor of the Nazi concentration camps who had been incarcerated because he was a homosexual. Forced wear a pink triangle, Brazda survived 3 years in Buchenwald. After his liberation, Brazda lived in Alsace until his death. Morin overlays Brazda's story with the German folktale of The White Maiden. First Edition, First Printing with the words "First Published 1950" printed on the copyright page. The original dustjacket has very minor wear to the head and base of the spine and corners. This First Issue dust jacket has a light "coffee cup" stain towards the 9s.6d. net printed price on the uncut bottom front flap. The printer appears to have had some difficulty with the name Cantwell. Also of importance: note the DJ has a spelling error "deeps" for "depths" in the final sentence of the 2nd. para. The book, 254 pp., 8vo., is in excellent condition. The binding is tight, with no cocking or leaning and the boards are crisp with only minor wear. A great copy of this TRUE FIRST EDITION that precedes the American edition by 3 days. Ex libris Stanislas Joly bookplate inside front cover.
