London: Chatto & Windus, 1962. First edition. Cloth. Very Good Indeed/Very Good. 8" by 5". None. The first edition of this novel by popular author Iris Murdoch The first edition of this fascinating novel by popular author Iris Murdoch. This novel presents the most complex web of human relationships Miss Murdoch's imagination has spun: tensile, elegant, shimmering. This novel is packed with irony, pathos, affection, lust, illusion and disillusion. A unique tragi-comedy about the folies, myseries, and ambiguities of love that engages and surprises. Iris Murdoch was a popular twentieth century novelist and philosopher. Her novels primarily touch on themes of good and evil, sexual relationships, morality and the power of the unconscious. A prominent philosopher, one of her most notable works is considered to be the reinterpretation of Aristotle and Plato, as well as her discussions of moral philosophy. In her lifetime Murdoch wrote 26 novels, as well of a series of short stories and several philosophical papers. With unclipped dustwrapper. Slight discolouration to head and tail of spine which is slightly faded. Inscribed by previous owner to title page "to Josephine, loving you, Philip x." Dustwrapper is smart, with slight shelfwear and chipping to spine as well as minor closed tear, repaired by previous owner. Unclipped. Wraps are slightly sunned particularly to spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed

Sinopse

The nine characters in this novel are all looking for love; and so closely is the web woven that the actions and passions of each are constantly affecting the others. The irony and pathos of this tangled situation has extended Iris Murdoch's powers to the full, but her mastery of it is complete. Impelled by affection, lust, lost scruple, illusion and disillusion, wanting to be free yet needing to be involved, these characters perform the linked figures of their destiny.
