Much of his work has an oriental flavour. the SF encyclopaedia describes this work as 'a surreally unfocused Urban Fantasy set in the crypto-Asian city of Heilar-Wey'His first and most famous novel 'The Circus of Dr. Lao' won Most Original Book in the National Book Awards in 1935.
