Uncle Remus Stories from the Original of Joel Chandler Harris

Illustrated end pages (with many of the characters from the tales within) and the drawings within the text have all been created by William Backhouse. Pale yellow coloured boards with red coloured illustration to the lower right-hand corner of the front panel; with red coloured titles to the backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper, again by William Backhouse, with red, black, white and blue coloured titles to the front panel and white coloured titles to the backstrip. In the late 19th century Joel Chandler Harris collected the African-American folk tales from the southern states of America. He created Uncle Remus to tell the tales in the patois of the southern states, but, this patois has become a little difficult for modern readers to enjoy, the stories of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and the rest of the inhabitants of the stories, and, so Jane Shaw has rendered the stories into a more modern English. Softening and rubbing of the backstrip edges with bumping along the lower book edges and of the book corners. Fading of the top book edges, commensurate with loss of dustwrapper. Some stains to the book panels with age toning of the text block edges, though the text itself is clean and bright. The dustwrapper, on the other hand is in shaky shape – please see photograph. There are large pieces missing from the top right hand and left hand corners of the front panel the lower edge of the front panel and a little to the lower edge of the rear panel. There is a very large arcing tear, measuring nearly 9 inches to the front panel; a previous owner has supported the tear with tape to the verso of the dustwrapper.
