Sobre este item

New York: The Penguin Press, 2008. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. As American Civil War historian and Pulitzer Prize winner McPherson demonstrates, Abraham Lincoln, with almost no military experience, created the post of Commander In Chief during the Civil War and then, while still managing his elected office of President with all its political turmoil, became the best Commander in Chief the U.S. has ever had. First edition, first printing (with complete number line). About 6 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches, 329 pages including notes and index. Illustrated with maps and b & w photos. Bound in brown paper-covered boards with black back strip and gold lettering on spine. Author's name stamped in gold on front cover. Dustjacket's front panel shows detail of a b & w photograph of President Lincoln and his generals on the Antietam battlefield in Virginia. A portrait of Lincoln is reproduced on the dj's spine and the back panel contains six blurbs praising the book. Boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked. Binding tight and square. No tearing or chipping, no bumped corners or spine ends. Not ex-library or remaindered. Upper front corner of dj shows a tiny tear (about 1/8th inch), o/w no noticeable flaws or damage. No creases or scratches. Not price-clipped. A very collectable copy of the book that won the Lincoln Prize in 2009.

Sinopse

The Pulitzer Prize?winning author reveals how Lincoln won the Civil War and invented the role of commander in chief as we know it As we celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln?s birth, this study by preeminent, bestselling Civil War historian James M. McPherson provides a rare, fresh take on one of the most enigmatic figures in American history. Tried by War offers a revelatory (and timely) portrait of leadership during the greatest crisis our nation has ever endured. Suspenseful and inspiring, this is the story of how Lincoln, with almost no previous military experience before entering the White House, assumed the powers associated with the role of commander in chief, and through his strategic insight and will to fight changed the course of the war and saved the Union.
