The Tragedy of Jane Shore

The Tragedy of Jane Shore" was performed first at Drury Lane Theatre in London in 1714, a series of domestic scenes and private distresses, with the wife being "forgiven" for her transgressions (because she "repents") and the husband being "honored" (because he "forgives"). Notes from the previous owner, the bookseller and appraiser Robert Allen, suggest that this edition was precided by four others, though the title page says that this was the Third Edition; two were authorized, that is, Lintot's quarto edition of 1714 and the duodecimo edition of 1714. Two additional unauthorized piracies were published, too: Powell's Dublin octavo also of 1714 and an edition printed in the Hague, 1714. Disbound from a larger volume, still tightly bound, a bit soiled and mildly foxed throughout; first signature present but detached. The author, Nicholas Rowe (20 June 1674 – 6 December 1718), is best known for being an early editor of William Shakespeare, being himself an English dramatist and poet, being "appointed Poet Laureate in 1715" (Wikipedia).
