"Designed for the Use of Schools, Seminaries, and Colleges in the United States." Richly illustrated - "embellished with upwards of 450 illustrations" in both color and black & white. The book is a collection of 96 Lessons grouped into two parts: Vegetable Tissues, and Animal Tissues. The front end paper bears the signature of Mary G. (Greene) Ware, author of "Elements of Character," "Thoughts in My Garden," and "Death and Life."

Here are a few examples of the Lessons: Vascular Tissue; Porous and Dotted Ducts; Hairs; Of the Stems of Trees; The Original Compounds of the Animal Body; Of Cells, Membranes and Fibres; The Nails; Nutrition in Man; The Structure of the Teeth; Nutrition in Birds; The Salivary Glands; The Properties of the Gastric Juice and Mucus; Muscular Fibre; Nervous System in Crustacea; The Eye in Insects; Organs of Vision in the Higher Animals; The Eyes in Reptiles, Birds and Mammalia...and much more.

Condition:
There is a thin stain line at the bottom edge of the front cover; clean back cover and spine. Small cloth tears at the cover corners. Small cloth pieces missing at the top and bottom edges of the spine. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Nice interior - the pages are lightly age-toned and mostly clean with some foxing to the first few and last few pages. There is a name written in pen (author Mary G. Ware), and a name/date (1863) written in pencil on the front end paper. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
