Edel and Laurence A24a, binding (a), 1500 copies printed October 17, 1884. With signature and inscription on the front free endpaper: "Fanny H. Brett, April 1888: From Mr. Hay, late Private Sec[re]t[ary] to President Lincoln, Washington." John Milton Hay (1838-1905), noted American poet/historian/statesman; served as Lincoln's secretary 1860-64; assistant adjutant general on the White House detail (1864); secretary to American legation in Paris (March, 1965); assistant secretary of state (1878-80) under Hayes; US Secretary of State (1898-1901) under McKinley; co author (with John Nicolay) of the 10-volume Lincoln biography (1890)..
