London: Published by R. B. Bate, 1849. viii, 48pp, [2]. Orignal publisher's blind-tooled cloth, lettered in gilt. Extremities rubbed with some soiling, spine sunned. Ink stamp of K. Brounger to recto of FFEP, very light damp-staining to top margins throughout. Sir Charles Frederick Alexander Shadwell (1814-1886), Admiral of the Royal Navy and Commander-in-Chief, China Station. During his time at the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth, having already seen a deal of active service in the Mediterranean and off the coast of Syria, Shadwell devoted himself to the study of surveying and more especially nautical astronomy. Such was his talent for scholarship and his prolific output that he would, in later life, be made president of the Royal Naval College at Greenwich and a fellow of both the Royal Astronomical and Geographical societies. . First edition. Quarto.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
