"Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was an English Anglican priest, hagiographer, antiquarian, novelist, and eclectic scholar. He is perhaps best known for writing the hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers," but his literary output was prodigious and varied, ranging from theological works to collections of folk songs. Baring-Gould was a polymath who wrote on subjects as diverse as folklore, mythology, and history. His book "The Lives of the Saints" remains a significant contribution to hagiography, and his novel "Mehalah: A Story of the Salt Marshes" is still read for its vivid storytelling and sense of place. Baring-Gould was a man of contradictions: a clergyman with a keen interest in the supernatural and the macabre, and a scholar who could write both popular and academic works with equal facility. His interests in folklore and mythology also led him to pen "The Book of Were-Wolves," one of the earliest works on lycanthropy. His life and works offer a fascinating glimpse into the intellectual currents of 19th-century England, reflecting a blend of Victorian skepticism and Romantic fascination with the unknown."-Bing
