Sobre este item
Columbia, South Carolina: State Printing Company, (1970). First edition, this copy inscribed, signed & dated by the author ("Sam L") in ink at the half-title page to Cartha"Deke" DeLoach, then number 3 at the FBI. Octavo (9.25 x 6.25"), xv & 407 pages including numerous illustrations (some in color, some folding) Publisher's white cloth lettered in blue at the spine & upper cover, in pictorial dust jacket.
Inscription faintly offsets to title page, otherwise fine in very good dust jacket, lightly browned, foxed & soiled mostly at the spine, with modest edge wear incuding short tears & small losses.
The author was the long-time editor & publisher of The State newspaper.
Cartha "Deke" DeLoach was deputy associate director of the FBI, the third highest ranking position behind only J Edgar Hoover and Clyde Tolson. In 1963, just after the assassination of John F Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson requested of Hoover that DeLoach be assigned to the White House. As described by New York Times reporter Tim Weiner "DeLoach was always at LBJ's beck and call, night and day, he was a talented political hatchet man, a trusted deputy to Hoover He was also crucial to intelligence investigations conducted during the Johnson presidency." As noted in his New York Times obituary, "DeLoach became head of FBI investigations in 1965, leading the bureau's assault on the Klan after the 1964 killings in Mississippi He supervised the investigation of the murder of the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr in 1968." Throughout the sixties, DeLoach worked diligently to improve the public image of the bureau & his negotiations with Jack Warner of Warner Bros Studios resulted in the production of the long-running TV series, The FBI. Upon retiring in 1970, DeLoach became vice-president for corporate affairs at PepsiCo.
