Clean, square, tight, and unmarked. Top edge gilt. With 31 full-page plates and a large fold-out map (31cm by 31cm) of the streets and attractions/monuments of Cairo. Tissue-guarded frontispiece. From the Preface: "The illustrations have been chosen with a view to showing the mediaeval city as far as possible before it suffered its European change." A history that traces the growth of Cairo. The author says his aim "is to clothe the vestiges of the mediaeval city with the associations that lend them their deepest interest... Many of the buildings of Cairo, especially the later mosques... ruined courts, crumbling streets, mere fragments of walls or inscriptions... I have tried to surround the remains... with the atmosphere of their historic associations." Two appendices: 1) Rulers and Monuments of Cairo; 2) Table for Converting Hijra Years into Anni Domini.
