Sobre este item

New York:: The Macmillan Company, 1905. Clean, square, tight, unmarked copy. Bound in the publisher's handsomely decorated green cloth. Top edge gilt. No owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean with NO foxing. Hint of crack to inner hinge paper but still holding very firm. The American novelist Mary Noailles Murfree (1850-1922) was born near Murfreesboro, Tennessee (named after her great-grandfather). Writing as Charles Egbert Craddock, she became Appalachia's first significant female writer. Like most of her books, THE STORM CENTRE is set in Tennessee. It tells the story of a romance between a Tennessee woman and a Union soldier. Paul Buck notes that Murfree's Civil War novels (along with those of George Washington Cable, Joel Chandler Harris, and Thomas Nelson Page) describe the culture of the South "which in its life was anathema to the North [but] could in its death be honored... Without offense to any living interest they could tell at last what they deemed to be the truth about the land they loved." A very uncommon title. "Published June, 1905" appears on the copyright page. BAL 14818. Menendez 705 [CIVIL WAR NOVELS]. Lively 22 [FICTION FIGHTS THE CIVIL WAR]. Buck pp. 203-208 [THE ROAD TO REUNION].. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good condition./No Dust Jacket. 8vo. (vi), 351pp. + 4 pages of ads..

Sobre About Books

About Books (Genny and Michael Winne, proprietors, formerly of Parsippany, New Jersey) has been selling rare and OP books since 1985. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines. Our inventory of over 40,000 volumes is especially strong in the specialties listed, but contains fine books in a variety of other fields as well. Because most of our books are stored in protective boxes, rather than on shelves, they cannot be viewed as a whole. If you wish to visit us to examine specific titles, please provide 24 hours notice and we will make them available for your inspection. Phone calls to (702) 750-2722 are welcome, but please, only between the hours of 8am and 10pm (west coast time).
