During a second trip to England, in 1847-1848, Emerson lectured in the industrial cities, which yielded material for this popular book (including a chapter on a visit to Stonehenge with Thomas Carlyle) and afforded him renewed contact with Europe's intellectual elite (among them, Dickens, Tennyson, and de Tocqueville). On an earlier trip, in 1832, he visited John Stuart Mill, Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Carlyle, the last of whom became a lifelong friend, correspondent, and intellectual goad. N. B.
