Sobre este item

London: T. T. and J. Tegg, 1833. Cloth. Good. 9.5" by 6". Not Stated. An illustrated study of the recreational activities of the English population through history. A fascinating work on the history of sports and other diverting recreational activities within England, 'from the earliest period to the present time', and illustrated with 140 vignette engravings depicting these pastimes. This is the work of Joseph Strutt, an English businessman, philanthropist and social reformer who donated the land for England's first urban public park, Derby Arboretum. This is a new edition, significantly expanded from the first edition of 1801, and edited by William Hone. With the illustrated bookplate of Michael Bryant to the front pastedown, indicating that this work was likely once under the ownership of the Olivier award winning British stage and television actor. To the front free endpaper are the notes of a former owner of this work, identifying references in literature to some of the sports and games discussed within the work. In the original quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Front and rear joints starting but holding firm. Losses to cloth of back strip most concentrated to head and tail. Bookplate to front pastedown. Notes to front free endpaper. Internally, binding strained in places. Pages generally clean and bright. Good
