Bound in half leather with gilt lettering and designs on spine, and marbleized paper covered boards. The first 9 monthly issues for the year 1846 are present, which run from pp. 9 - 378. Pages 379 - 528 for the subsequent issues are not present. Frontis, title page, preface, table of contents and embellishments are missing (pp.1 -8), as is the plate of The Old Billop House on p.106. (P. 105 was blank, being the verso of plate.) Profusely illustrated with many full page engravings - approximately 85 are present among the nine issues. Hinges broken, front end paper missing, old masking tape connecting front paste down and frontispiece verso, mostly mild/ some moderate foxing to interior, light wear to board edges and spine ends, spine mildly cocked. This is an apparent reissue with a twist of original title by the publisher of the 1869 Women of New York or the Under-world of a Great City by Ellington - a pseudonym according to OCLC, possibly for James Dabney McCabe in the opinion of one scholar (citation on request).
