London: R. and J. Dodsley, 1755. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo 7" - 7. Particularly handsomely rebound copy of the First Edition thus, being the first of this translation and with extensive additions and commentaries by William Hay and Cowley. "In these imitations Mr. Hay has generally preserved the sense, and often the spirit and turn of Martial, according to the publisher. Rebound in creamy black leather over boards, silver lettering over burgundy leather labels at spine of title, author, and date of publication. New endpapers, fine softpaper interior is quite bright and clean, unmarked and uber-tightly bound. The title-pages are in Latin on verso facing title-page, in English and with Latin text on verso and English translation on recto throughout. Fine black-and-white heads, tails and some initials, too. The compiler, William Hay (1695 - 1755) was elected to Parliament in 1734, says his Wikipedia entry, and he remained there until his death. This was published just before he passed away. [xii], 239 [240 blank], 241 - 268] pp. including Index; p. 239 is mis-numbered 139,Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
