Nashville, TN: Tavel, Eastman & Howell, 1877. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Good +. 5 3/4 X 8 5/8 Inches. 230 PP. Housed in original brown cloth binding with gilt title stamping to front cover.
The report includes:
1) Report on Sanitary Reform in Nashville (by J. Berrien Lindsley)
2) On the Topography of Nashville (by Wilbur F. Foster)
3) On the Geology of Nashville (by James M. Safford)
4) On the Water Supply of Nashville (by Nathaniel T. Lupton)
5) On the Climate of Nashville (by Albert C. Ford)
6) Brief Annals of Nashville (by Anson Nelson) and
7) Analyhtical Index (by George Blackie.

An important 19th Century history and description of Nashville, TN. Much of the text deals with the issues surrounding the development of what would become one of the largest cities in the American South. Coverage includes the newly instituted practices of school inspection and food inspection as well as ideas for a new city charter. Profusely divided into statistics on "white" citizens and "Colored/Black" citizens of the city. Interestingly, much of the book deals with the need for an intellectual citizenry and the steps that should be taken to secure this future for the city. The very scarce original 1877 map of the city of Nashville, TN is laid in loose.

Ex Tennessee State Library copy. Stamped and marked in several locations throughout the book. Handwritten annotation on the front pastedown indicates that this particular copy was presented to the Library by John Berrien Lindsley himself. J.B. Lindsley was the co-founder of the medical school at The University of Nashville (what would become Vanderbilt Medical School) and was instrumental in the protection of the Vanderbilt campus during the Civil War. He was also the co-founder of Montgomery Bell Academy and was an heir to the Carnton Plantation in Franklin (as his wife was Sarah McGavock, the granddaughter of Randall McGavock). In 1866, Lindsley was appointed Superindent of all schools in the State of Tennessee. He later authored the Confederate Military Annals of Tennessee (1886). Lindsley was the son of Philip Lindsley, the first President of The University of Nashville (Vanderbilt).

The original map measures roughly 20X24 inches. Ex-Library copy as noted above. Light wear to edges and corners. A bit of toning and occasional wear to text. Front hinge a bit weak. OCLC locates only FIVE (5) copies of the text, with no notation as the census of the original map.
