Sobre este item

London: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd,, 1940. First edition thus, number 61 of 125 copies, all signed by the illustrator and specially bound. The text reprints FitzGerald's first published version of the Rubáiyát (1859), afterwards substantially revised by the translator four times. Each of the five versions has its champions - the original text was the favourite of private presses and of deluxe illustrated editions, as here. Gooden (1892-1955) was an English artist who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and is best known for his fine copper engravings, including several banknote designs for the Bank of England and pictorial bookplates, including designs made for Queen Elizabeth II. Octavo. Original green quarter morocco, spine lettered in gilt, green cloth sides, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, cream endpapers. In the original card slipcase. With 4 full sized plates and 4 small illustrations by Stephen Gooden. Spine lightly sunned, minor toning to endpapers in gutter, a near-fine copy in slightly darkened and rubbed slipcase. Coumans 63.
