London: Chatto & Windus, 1892. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. New [Revised, and First One-Volume] Edition. Original grey-blue cloth, decorated in darker blue. Corners bumped, a few light marks, faint signature (1906) on front free endpaper, very good. Two editions of the novel were published (both in 2 volumes) in 1881: the critics charged Mallock with having written a licentious novel. More than 10 years elapsed before this first one volume edition was issued, for which Mallock wrote a new preface (dated September 1892), explaining that he now agreed with his critics, and had consequently removed offending passages. Late publisher's catalogue dated September 1900 bound in at end, suggesting the book did not sell well..
