A large sheet (grey paper, 320 x 515 mm), of pencil studies of ducks from life, including garganey, tufted duck, mallard (2), teal (2), merganser, pintail, widgeon, scaup, heron and head studies of song thrush and teal. Signed and dated "Roland Green, Jan 17, 1927 (lower right) and inscribed "Drawn specially for Geo. h.[?] Clark" (lower left). The sheet mounted onto graphite-grey mounting board. Framed and glazed, with a cream-coloured acid-free mount, the overall dimensions 550 x 725 mm. It is perhaps when sketching, without the distraction of colour, technique and composition, that we are able to truly gage the measure of an artist to capture the characteristics of the living bird, and in these sketches, Roland Green displays his craft brilliantly; his birds alive and full of movement. [Roland Green (1890 - 1972) was an English bird artist, who produced numerous bird studies in watercolours and oils. Green remained a bachelor throughout his life, making his home in a disused drainage mill at Hickling in Norfolk. He set many of his bird paintings in the Broads, capturing some of the wild beauty of this region in his distinctive style.Many successful one man exhibitions followed in London as well as in Norwich.
