A Memorial was a procedural matter in which disputes in the governance of the college could be resolved. In this Memorial of the Resident Instructors, the issue refers back to the original Charter of the University, which declared that the University was a Corporation consisting of seven people, a President, five Fellows, and a Treasurer. The Fellows, it was being contended, were defined in the Charter as employees of the University who were resident at the school and actually engaged in carrying out the duties of instruction and government. It was further being contended that the meaning of the text required all Fellows to also be Resident Instructors. The current Resident Instructors noted that some Fellows were not Resident Instructors, and therefore the University was operating illegally, and the Memorial was established to resolve this problem. This 15 page paper is the Report of a Committee of the Overseers of Harvard College on The Memorial of the Resident Instructors.
The booklet, which measures approximately 5.25 x 8.5 inches, contains 15 pages for the overseer's report. The pages are string bound and without covers. The string binding is not secure, and many pages are close to detachment. The pages are slightly tanned. The text is clear and easily read. There are pencil markings on the title page and some underlining of text in the body of the text. The booklet is also signed and dated by the Hon. Josiah Quincy, Nov. 4, 1895. The booklet is in fair condition.
The illustrations accompanying this description shows the front cover, a 2-page spread showing the first page of text and the Josiah Quincy sigature, and two 2-page spreads of text.
