Please See All Photos. - criticizes the French Revolution, stating that it was a move towards a democratic shift in French government that ended with the rise of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.0 Burke was a member of the Whig faction in the British Parliament, who saw themselves as champions of liberty against the arbitrary tyranny of kings.4 Burke immediately opposed the French Revolution, warning his countrymen against the dangerous abstractions of the French. He argued the case for tradition, continuity, and gradual reform based on practical experience.1 Burke also discerned in the doctrine of sovereignty of the people, in whose name the revolutionaries were destroying the old order, another and worse form of arbitrary power.3
