Chronological Synopsis. In Depth and Substantial analysis of 19th Century French Realist Painting -- Promiently features beautiful works by artists Bonvin, Ribot, Breton, Henner, Vollon among others. Cloth, with DJ, 4to. , xiii + 346 pp. , illustrated with 43 color plates and nearly 400 halfotnes. “Gleaners, plowmen, ragpickers, street performers, and common laborers were immortalized by the Realist artists. As commentators and reporters of their own time, these artists maintained a dedication to ordinary aspects of daily life, regional customs and traditions, and miseries and crises stirred by the Industrial Revolution, which was changing not only the French landscape but its people. Certain painters like Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas, and Edouard Manet-familiar and important artists in any art historical survey-provided a significant contribution to the Realist tradition. Others, such as Jules Breton, Francois Bonvin, Theodule Ribot, Antoine Vollon, Jules Batien-Lepage, and Leon Lhermitte, who were important and influential in their own time, in The Realist Tradition receive the recognition and reevaluation they have long deserved. A once-important and then-forgotten aspect of French painting in the nineteenth century is presented. Gabriel P. Weisberg traces the seven decades of the movement, from its origins in 1830 to its shift towards Naturalism after the Franco-Prussian War and toward its decline at the turn of the century. In addition to Weisberg’s study of the evolution of social themes and the critical theory that affected the movement, Petra ten-Doesschate Chu analyzes the development and significance of Realist drawing. Oil paintings, water colors, drawings and sketches of all sizes and varying degrees of complexity reveal a veritable panorama of nineteenth-century French society. Much of the information presented is new. Interviews with descendants, archival documents, contemporary commentary and reviews by art critics and historians of the period, as well as extensive documentation and bibliographic references make The Realist Tradition a valuable and fascinating tool for art historians, cultural historians, collectors, students-specifically all of those readers who wish to view again an era when truthful representation was a prime consideration in French art. The Realist Tradition includes two major essays; a catalog with sectional essays and entries; 43 color illustrations; nearly 400 halftones; 73 biographies with period photos of artists; chronological time chart; bibliography; and index. ” A masterpiece of scholarship and an important study of French nineteenth century painting. An indispensable reference work for this period of art. -- with a bonus offer-- .
