Sobre este item

London.: Printed For William Miller, Albemarle Street, By S. Gosnell, Little Queen Street.. 1808, but after 1817.. 22 hand coloured stipple engravings by J. Dadley, title-pages in English and French, 50 text pp. Bound in contemporary gilt decorated black morocco, re-backed preserving parts of the original spine, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, new endpapers, some extensive offsetting to the text block from the plates, but although the plates have some faint spotting they are generally unaffected. Still a good firm copy. 35.5 x 25.5cm.

In keeping with all other copies of this work we have handled watermarks on the text leaves and plates show differing dates. In this copy thirteen leaves are watermarked: the French titlepage together with another leaf Edmeads & Pine 1804; 6 leaves watermarked E&P 1807; 2 leaves Turkey Mills J Whatman 1817 and 3 watermarked J Whatman 1817. Attributed to the artist George Henry Mason - a British army officer who traveled to Canton in 1789, making drawings of the costumes and customs of the region, including these disturbing images of torture and execution in China. The preface in both English and French. An interesting work with finely executed colour plates.

"The view expressed in the preface was that legal torture, was an instrument of tyranny, an attitude perhaps indicative of pressures in Britain for legal reform." (Lust - Western Books on China Published up to 1850). .
