As a leader in the new Republican party, Banks was a compelling orator and seen as a politician with a future. He became Republican Speaker of the House, but fell short of his ultimate goal, losing the nomination of his party for the presidency to Abraham Lincoln. At the beginning of the Civil War, Lincoln appointed Banks a major general. He had a undistinguished record as a commanding officer, suffering major defeats in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, the Battle of Cedar Mountain, and the Red River Campaign. Besides book fairs and mail-order catalogues, long-time collectors and dealers will remember our lengthy For Sale ads in the Antiquarian Bookman and similar magazines.
