Sobre este item
NY: Random House, 1976. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Fine. An association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Alice Bronsdon -- with the very good wishes of -- Barry Commoner." Uncommon signed. Bronsdon and Commoner were colleagues and co-authors on at least several papers on environmental mutagens (see this paper, for example). In addition to being a cellular biologist, Commoner was arguably the best recognized environmentalist of his day. He was called the "Paul Revere of ecology" by Time magazine in 1970 and was one of the first to bring the idea of sustainability to the American public. He was known for his debate with Paul Ehrlich about the source of environmental woes; his stance was that environmental degradation could be solved by technological and social solutions and wasn't simply a matter of population. In this bestselling book, The Poverty of Power, Commoner looks at the three interconnected "e's": environment, energy, and the economy. Ultimately the book is a critique of capitalism. His third book, much of it excerpted in The New Yorker. A very near fine book in a fine jacket.

Sobre Rural Hours
Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
