Sobre este item

London: T. Cadell; E. Moxon, 1834. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". Joseph Mallord William Turner; Thomas Stothard. A lovely leather-bound copy containing the poetry of Samuel Rogers, bound by J. Kelly, with illustrated engravings by J. M. W. Turner and Thomas Stothard First edition. Bound in full-crushed morocco with gilt illustrated boards by J. Kelly. Illustrations include numerous in-text engravings by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851), the English painter, printmaker, and watercolourist, as well as Thomas Stothard (1755-1834). This is a lovely collection of poetry by Samuel Rogers, which includes some of the illustrations that the poets commissioned for his popular 'Italy' poem. Contents include 'The Pleasures of Memory', 'Human Life', 'Ode to Superstition', 'From a Greek Epigram', and 'From an Italian Sonnet'. Samuel Rogers (1763-1855) was an English poet, who was part of the Romantic circle which included Wordsworth, Coleridge, and Lord Byron. His recollections of time spent with these friends has been a key source of information for biographical works on their artistic and personal lives. Rogers was offered the position of poet laureate following Wordsworth's death, but declined because of his old age. With a bookplate to front paste down belonging to Edward John Kenney (1924-2019), a British Latinist who spent the majority of his career at Cambridge University as a leading expert on the work of Ovid and Lucretius. Collated, complete. Bound in a full crushed-morocco binding by J. Kelly. Externally, very smart. A bit of rubbing and wear to the extremities and to the spine, particularly to the head and tail. Very light fading to spine. Offsetting to endpapers from leather binding. Prior owner's bookplate to front paste down. Prior owner's ink initials to verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean throughout, with light age-toning to margins and light spots throughout. Very Good
