Sobre este item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1874 . First edition. Cloth. Good. 9" by 6.5". Frank Holl. The first edition in book form of this illustrated Victorian era picaresque classic from Anthony Trollope. The first edition in book form of this novel by Anthony Trollope, first appearing in 1873 in serialised format in weekly illustrated newspaper 'The Graphic'.The fourth work in acclaimed Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope's series of Palliser novels, more commonly referred to as the 'Parliamentary Novels'. The novels encompass several literary genres, while also serving as a satire and parody of Victorian life, and criticism of the English government's ability to provide corrupt and corruptible people with power.Illustrated with twelve engraved plates to volume I, and eleven to volume II, the work of English painter and royal portraitist Frank Holl. Collated, complete.Retaining original half titles, with the inscription 'Brakefield' to head of each half title.A smart Trollope first edition. Rebacked, in the publisher's original cloth binding with original back strip laid down and boards restored. Endpapers renewed. Discolouration to back strips and rubbing to boards, with bumping to back strip tails. Front hinge of volume I starting, with board holding firm but one page detached. Inscriptions to half titles. Internally, bindings strained to each volume to centre of text block, with three gatherings loosening to tail in volume II. Pages generally clean and bright, with light spotting to plates. Good

Sinopse

The fourth novel in Trollope's Palliser series, Phineas Redux stands on its own as a compelling work of political intrigue, personal crisis, and romantic jealousy. Phineas Finn lives quietly in Dublin, resigned to the fact that his political career is over and coming to terms with the death of his wife. He receives an unexpected invitation to return to Parliament, and jumps at the chance, whereupon old romances and rivalries are revived. When his adversary, Mr. Bonteen, is murdered, suspicion immediately falls on Finn, and his former friends and lovers seem only to add to his shame.
