He began his governmental career in 1948 as United Nations representative for the provisional government of Israel, and became permanent representative in 1949. From 1950 to 1959 he served concurrently as the Israeli ambassador to the United States. In Israel, Eban has held many cabinet positions, including that of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the Knesset for decades.
