With 40 engraved plates by Browne, including a frontispiece and vignette title page. Contemporary green half morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to spine, and textured green cloth over boards. All edges gilt; marbled endpapers. Light spotting throughout. Moderate wear and handling to binding. Very good. This landmark novel weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. Dickens takes aim at arranged marriages, and along the way deals with child cruelty, broken and abusive familial relationships, and the fears elicited by the advent of the railway - which, towards the end of his life, Dickens was to experience for himself while writing Our Mutual Friend.

Publisher’s printed green boards, front board with 'Phiz' illustration of three young ladies (ads on rear), pale yellow endpapers. Spine discolored and with minor loss to extremities and a sliver of the paper from the upper spine has fallen away Tasteful morocco booklabel. Overall, an exceptionally clean copy in the original fragile binding which remains very tight and presentable. Wrongly attributed to Charles Dickens who in fact wrote a repost to Caswall's work entitled Sketches of Young Gentlemen in 1838
