Recent rebind in half brown calf and brown buckram boards, gilt ruled spine compartments with maroon and black leather spine labels, new endpapers, all edges marbled. Pp. xiv, errata, [1]-624. Illustrated with 40 engravings in total (includes frontispiece, and engraved title-page). First edition, first issue with date on engraved title page, the misprint "screamed" on page 132, and with Chap. XXVII on page 282 (not 283 as listed). Mild to medium foxing to several pages, with heavier foxing on the frontispiece and engraved title-page, and with some thumbing, ink signature of previous owner John F. Perry (late 19th-century member of various Antiquarian and Archaelogical Societies), and small blind embossed stamp on front blank, otherwise interior good, in a very good recent binding.
