Collated, complete.Based on Jones's own experiences as an infantryman, the poem narrates the experiences of English Private John Ball in a mixed English-Welsh regiment over the course of seven months, ending at the assault on Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme. The work employs a mixture of lyrical verse and prose, and ranges in tone from formal to Cockney colloquial and military slang.The winner of the Hawthornden Prize. Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
