Sobre este item
New York: Friendship Press,, 1934. First edition, first printing, scarce presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. M. C. Gile. With the writer's gratitude and good wishes - Albert W. Palmer. May 15, 1934". Albert Wentworth Palmer (1879-1954) was a Christian minister and the president of the Chicago Theological Seminary. Between the wars, he travelled extensively in Japan and, after Pearl Harbor, emerged as a vocal opponent of internment. Here, he calls for American openness towards people from East and South-east Asia and an end to policies of economic and racial discrimination. Palmer is also remembered for The Mountain Trail and Its Message (1911), in which he recounts time spent hiking with John Muir and the Sierra Club. The recipient, Josephine Ellen Richards (1855-1938) was an educator and evangelical. In 1886, she married Moses Clement Gile (1858-1916), a professor of classical languages at Colorado College. In 1900, she founded a departmental Greek and Latin library at the college through a gift of 300 books. Octavo. Original purple cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Cloth clean, top edge dusty, nick to head of couple of leaves; unclipped jacket sunned and rubbed: a fine copy in near-fine jacket.
