Sobre este item

London England: Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1969. Hardback. Orange and Stuart 1641-1672. Slight shelf wear to edge of D/J. Price clipped to D/J. Translated by Arnold Pomerans. The aim of this book is to show that the party struggles between the House of Orange and the Regents of Holland in the Dutch Republic of the mid-eighteenth century can only be properly understood in the light of Orange links with the English House of Stuart; and it is argued that, despite the views of such influential Dutch historians as Fruin and Japiske, the Dutch national interates was not always best served by the ruling House. Professor Geyl views the dynastic marraige that took place in 1641, between the young William II and Mary, the daughter of Stuart, as the root cause of future party conflicts in the Republic. Seen by both the Stadholder, Frederick Henry, and the King of England, Charles I, as a means of strengthening their power and influence in domestic and foreign affairs, the union was of equal importance in giving new life to the opposition which the Regents of Holland put up in the name of the national cause. In tracing the story of how the States of Holland reacted to Orange intrigue with the Stuarts after 1941, professor Geyl clarifies the background that explains De Witt's heoric and sometimes solitary stand against OPrange ambitions. He shows that in acting for the commercial interests of Holland, De Witt was also acting in the national interest. Professor Gey;'s fascinatinf and detailed narrative is absorbing to read not only because of the power struggles described but because of the light it throws on Anglo-Dutch relations in the seventeenth century. 443 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). 1st English Translation Edition.
