Sobre este item

New York: Stringer & Townsend, 1854. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Firts ediiton. Small 8vo in blindstamped brown cloth with front board gilt illustration of the Mission House, spine ornately titled in gilt. One page publisher's ads at front, 304 pp. Frontis engraving "The New Mission House At The Five Points" and five additional full page engravings in the text. A tight example, front gilt bright but spine strip well sunned, jagged nick to the head of the spine; scattered light foxing; the rear free endpaper and last three leaves have a small margin chip not affecting the text. New York City's "Five Points" district (approximately where the western boundary of Chinatown in lower Manhattan is today), was the most notoriously unlawful and dangerous neighborhood in the city and The Old Brewery, (which was built in 1792 but became a rookery after the Panic of 1837) the most vile and dangerous "residence" within it. At the time this book was written, New York had only a fledgling police force and they would only rarely enter Five Points, which at the time was the domain of gangs such as the Plug Uglies, Dead Rabbits and Bowery B'hoys; it was a hotbed of anti-Irish immigrant sentiment and riots were a common occurance. The Methodist Ladies of The Mission bought The Old Brewery in 1852, evicted the estimated thousand plus denizens, had it demolished in 1853 and replaced it, as this book tells , with the New Mission House.
