Small octavo; 224pp. Black dust jacket with yellow lettering and 9/6 net price intact; book in black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Produced in conformity with war economy standards, per note on copyright. Jacket chipped at spine ends with loss to author's first initial at head, also with some rubbing and a few shallow tears along edges, and some toning and smudging to back and down spine. Boards a bit worn at corners and spine ends, with some fading along top edge, especially over spine and back panel. Spine slightly cocked. Pages a bit toned but unmarked.
Mid-career novel by Green, and basis for the 1947 British film noir directed by Carol Reed and starring James Mason, Robert Newton, Cyril Cusack, and Kathleen Ryan (as well as Doctor Who's First Doctor, William Hartnell, as Fencie the Barman). The film won a BAFTA for Best British Film, and was nominated by the Academy for Best Editing.
