In 1983, the death of the renowned English photographer Bill Brandt (b. 1904), whose work had been a major influence on Kenna, prompted him to visit the industrial sites which Brandt had photographed in the 1930's. They were only a few miles from Kenna's birthplace. The result was his first serious industrial photographic study, created of a four year period from 1983-1987, of the cotton and wool mills in Lancashire and Yorkshire.
